This 1930 Duesenberg Model J is a one-off Sport Berline created by Murphy. The body was designed by Franklin Hershey, who later became famous for styling the 1955 Ford Thunderbird. The car was built for George Whittell Jr., a flamboyant millionaire known for his extravagant lifestyle. Ownership quickly passed to Jessie McDonald, which earned the car its nickname the “Whittell Mistress Car.”
McDonald kept the car into the late 1930s, and since then it has remained in the hands of serious collectors, preserving its remarkable originality. Today, it still retains its original body, chassis, and engine. In 1998, it was restored by Duesenberg expert Chris Charlton, and in 2023 it sold at Pebble Beach for $2 million.
