This 1929 Duesenberg Model J is a Disappearing Top Torpedo Convertible Coupe by Murphy, one of only six built, and just four survive today. The car was originally sold to David Gray of Santa Barbara, California, an early investor in Henry Ford who famously sold his stock back to Ford in 1919 for $26 million. The price when new was $16,000.
By the early 1950s, the car had been modified and fitted with a Buick engine, but that was later replaced with the correct Duesenberg engine, J-414. Over the years, it became part of notable collections, including those of Rick Carroll and the Blackhawk Museum.
In 2016, it sold for $3 million. The current owner has recently completed a meticulous restoration, returning the car to its original look with polished and brushed aluminum bodywork paired with deep blue fenders, a striking combination that reflects its 1929 elegance.
